THE HON. LADY JUSTICE HELEN OMONDI

The Honourable Lady Justice Hellen Amolo Omondi (b. 1961) was appointed judge of the High Court of Kenya on 23rd December 2007.  She is an alumni of University of Nairobi and Kenya School of Law. She also holds a Post Graduate Hubert Humphrey Fellowship from the University of Minnesota. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she had served the Judiciary in various capacities rising from the rank of a District Magistrate to a Chief Magistrate and Deputy Registrar.

As a judicial officer she has held several responsibilities, which include serving as the National Vice-Chair of the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) and Chair of the Auctioneers Licencing Board. She has also been an accomplished KMJA Trainer for the UNHCR Programme on International Refugee Law and Protection. Lady Justice Omondi has several publications on contemporary legal issues, among them “Child Labour and the Law” and “Cat among the Pigeons” and "Domestic Violence Act: A Bridge Over Troubled Waters".

On her professional development, Lady Justice Omondi has attended various courses in her career in the Judiciary. In 1997 she attended the 11th Triennial Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association in Cape-town. In 1999, she attended the Atlanta Enhancement Workshop on “Global Development and Social Justice” in Emory University, USA. She also attended a conference on “Expert Evidence in Medico-Legal Case” in Nairobi, and the Jurists Conference on “Enhancing Judicial Independence and Profession Performance” in 2001. In 2010, she attended the International Association of Women Judges in Africa Regional Conference both in Tanzania and Zambia. She also participated in a workshop on “Investigation, Prosecution and Adjudication of Corruption and Economic Crimes” in Nyali, Kenya.

Lady Justice Omondi enjoys singing, swimming, gardening, poetry and writing short stories.
