Justice N.R.O. Ombija holds a Masters Degree in Public International Law from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. His undergraduate degree was obtained with honors from the Faculty of Law of the same university in 1979.

Before joining the bench, he ran the law firm of Ombija and Company Advocates where he practiced as a litigation and conveyancing lawyer for 22 years.

He has held other distinguished positions, notably as a commissioner in the City Council of Kisumu (1990 - 1992); as a consulting editor for Contemporary Who is Who (ABI); as the Deputy Director-General of the International Biographical Centre (Cambridge) and as the Secretary-General of the United Cultural Convention (ABI) 2011.

Justice Ombija's other achievements include an award of the International Peace Prize and the American Medal of Honour and his membership of the World Nations Congress, the International Biographical Association and the World Peace & Diplomacy Forum. He is also a recipient of The Key Award: 2003 (ABI); The Outstanding Professional Award (ABI) 2003; The World Lifetime Achievement Award (ARB), 2003; International Cultural Diploma of Honour (ABI) 2003; The 2003 Man of the Year (ABI) and he has been included in Contemporary Who is Who 2002/2003 (ABI) and in the Hall of Fame of the American Biographical Institute, 2010. He is also acclaimed as one of the 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century by the IBC, Cambridge.

His other professional memberships include The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators - CIArb (United Kingdom 2011); The National Geographic Society; The Professional Societies of East Africa; The East African Judges and Magistrates Association and The Kenya Judges and Magistrates Association.

Justice Ombija has previously served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Maseno School (1998-2009) and a Member of the Board of Governors of Kisumu Boys High School (1988-1993).

He has written academic papers and made keynote presentations on a wide variety of subjects, including:
