Kenya Law 7th Annual Conference: Looking back, the journey has been remarkable and the future looks bright

“We are proud of your work.” These were the words of Chief Justice Hon David Maraga, EGH to the Kenya Law Staff during the 7th Annual Staff Conference held at the Safari Park Hotel on 15th September 2017.
“We are on the right track and I urge all of you to continue with the same zeal and momentum because this journey has just began, let us all strive to make public legal information accessible so that we can have an enlightened society for our benefit and the benefit of future generation,” he said.
In his speech, read on his behalf by the Hon Lady Justice Fatuma Sichale, who was the chief Guest, the Chief Justice said the service provided by Kenya Law is likened to that of oil to a car engine- providing the important ingredient of legal information that facilitates and catalyses the wheels of justice. He reiterated that the responsibility falls on all employees and that everyone must guard it with all due diligence, because the Law Reporting task is undertaken on behalf of future citizens.
The Editor/CEO, Mr. Long’et Terer, echoed his words while highlighting the achievements and the awards won including the FiRe Award and Free Access to Law Award, noted that there is room to better our services.
“We achieve so much but I must confess that we don’t realise all that we have set out to do and it is my hope that this year we shall do even better than last year.” He asserted.
Mr. Terer gave a highlight of the prospected activities for the new financial year touching on Kenya Law’s core mandate, operational efficiency and organisational development. He mentioned areas of emphasis like: working on the backlog so that publications are current; production of specialised Law Reports and timely production of publications so as to ensureconsistency & predictability in standardised publications.
“We should improve on our operational efficiency and our major aim this year is to ensure that our founding law is in line with the Constitution of Kenya. ”Mr. Terer said.
He also mentioned four things which would guide the organization and serve as a theme for the year 2017/2018 particularly for members of staff, these are, good planning and execution of activities; enhanced engagement with stakeholders to synchronise their expectations with the needs of the organization; enhanced brand awareness; and the need to develop new income streams by either monetising online content or devicing new approaches to sales and marketing.
The Deputy CEO Ms. Monica Achode also highlighted Kenya Law’s achievements.
“Over the years there is one thing that Kenya Law has become synonymous with, and that is excellence in publishing of legal information.” she said.
The annual conference saw former council members: Hon. Lady Justice Roselyne Nambuye, Hon. Lady Justice Lydia Achode, Ms. Christine Agimba and Prof. Patricia Kameri-Mbote recognized for their exemplary support and service to the council.
Other dignitaries who attended were Council members: Prof. Kiarie Mwaura (Dean, University Of Nairobi School of Law); Ms. Jennifer Gitiri (State Counsel, Office of the Attorney General) and Ms. Eva Kimeiywo (Senior Printer – Government Press).
Other dignitaries included Ms. Jennifer Nganga (representing the Hon. Attorney General) and Mr Runo (representing the Government Printer).
This conference was also an opportunity for the organization to recognize and feat various staff members for their contributions in the year.
The departments’ nominated the following staff members for these awards;
- Team Player of the Year, ICT Department Ms. Mary Waruguru
- Team Player of the Year, Laws of Kenya Department Mr. Christian Ateka
- Team Player of the Year, Law Reporting Department Ms. Jennifer Ogada
- Team Player of the Year, HR Department Mr. Rashid Kiplimo
- Team Player of the Year, Research & Development Department Mr. Kenneth Oduor
- Team Player of the Year, Sales Marketing & Customer Care Department Ms. Carolyne Wairimu
- Team Player of the Year, Finance Department Mr. John Paul Mutugi
Out of these nominations the following staff members were awarded for their exemplary performance in the year:

- Employee of the Year Ms. Jennifer Ogada, Law Reporting Department
- 1st Runners Up Mr. Christian Ateka, Laws of Kenya Department

- 2nd Runners Up Ms. Mary Waruguru, ICT Department
The Human Resource and Administration department led by the departments’ manager Ms. Janette Watila organized the conference. The talented Kenya Law Choir provided the entertainment at the colorful Conference.
